June '23 - Sprint to Game Loop
·We did it! Our Kiwi Game Starter applications are submitted! 🥳 In addition to resubmitting Out of Sight this year, after reaching the finals last year, we have also entered applications for our other two projects, Buy My Snake Oil and Speed Golf Royale. Although these latter two games are still in the early stages of prototyping, we believe it's beneficial to participate in these competitions. They help us to approach our game development process more critically, forcing us to consider the type of game we're creating and the specific audience we're targeting.
With three game pitches now in motion, we are more excited than ever. The only remaining challenge lies in securing the necessary funding to ensure we deliver the highest quality gaming experience possible.
So what have we been working on specifically?
Buy My Snake Oil
Quest System
This month, our main focus was to create a minimal game loop for the upcoming Kiwi Game Starter. Our aim was to provide the judges with a playable experience that would give them a clear idea of the game's concept. This also allowed us to dedicate time to refining the questing system.
The core game loop of Snake Oil revolves around gathering, crafting, haggling, and persuading. The initial quest will serve as a tutorial, introducing players to the basics of gathering and crafting. At this stage, we aim to keep things simple and straightforward.
After implementing the haggling system, we will integrate it into the first quest. Once players have crafted the potion and returned to the NPC, they will have the chance to engage in haggling. After all, who doesn't enjoy a good haggle?
The implementation of the persuasion system in the small prototype may be delayed due to its complexity. We aim to include it at a later stage to ensure its proper integration.
Potion Crafting System
Our game now includes the foundations of a potion crafting system. Players can now whip up a simple potion using ingredients they've collected from the world. We have integrated art into the view, taking inspiration from Coffee Talk to guide the layout and design of each element. Moving forward, our goal is to give players full control over the snake oil salesman's hand during the potion crafting process. They will be able to crush herbs in the pestle and mortar, drop ingredients onto the scale, and finally place them into the cauldron. This level of interactivity adds depth and immersion to the game.
Speed Golf Royale
A minimal version of the core game loop has been completed. Meaning a player can join a server, play a single hole, and post a score. A little bit short of the desired main loop which will be three holes for each match. However, this will have to wait now until after Stealth Fest. So unfortunately our teddy bear buddy here has to wait at the tee block his some playing partners
Out of Sight
Out of Sight has been temporarily deprioritized in recent weeks as we focused on developing a playable loop for other games in time for KGS. However, with Steam's Stealth Fest approaching at the end of this month, our attention will shift back to OOS. In preparation for this event, our main focus for Out of Sight will be polishing the boss in the demo and refining the mechanics for the boss encounter in stage 2 of the game. We will also be dedicating efforts towards general polish and enhancing the overall game feel. Stay tuned for updates on our social media channels as we approach Stealth Fest.
