Feb '23 Update - Two New Games
·As we've been waiting for results on NZFC funding, we've been taking a bit of a break from Out of Sight and working on our two new game concepts, Buy My Snake Oil and Speed Golf Royale which we are excited to share with you.
Buy My Snake Oil
We've been focusing on closing the game loop, which involves the NPC approaching the player for help, the player collecting ingredients, making a potion, and then bartering with the NPC when selling them the potion. The player can then use the money earned from selling the potion to buy an upgrade.
Additionally, we've been working on the opening cutscene using Unity's Timeline, and Gareth has been learning more about using this feature to bring our vision to life. We're starting to get a feel for the visual design and how the environment will look in the open-world view. We've also been adding ingredients and foliage assets like the orange puffball mushroom, trees, and rocks, and we've created a decent run cycle for the moonicorn. We primarily use frame-by-frame animations hand-drawn in Procreate, with occasional simple transformation animations in Spine Pro and Unity.
We're also exploring different approaches for multiplayer gameplay. It's a complex task, but we're excited to see how we will create a fun and engaging online co-op multiplayer experience for our players.
Speed Golf Royale
This game is too large in scope for just the two of us to complete, so we are working towards a fun prototype stage to pitch for further funding. This will include dedicated servers as well as hosted sessions with friends. So far hosting lobby is available through SteamP2P.
There are currently two holes you can play with leaderboards at the end of each hole. These holes will be in ongoing changes as we improve on gameplay features. The first hole is pretty basic and not very interesting but it's mainly for play testing right now. The second hole is way too over the top with the floating islands. We'll dial back the difficulty on that one to make it fairer for the player.
Aiming with a real-time physics simulation is completed. This means the trajectory prediction line will take account of physics materials, meaning you can visualise the ball bounce. Shout out to Tarodev for his helpful youtube tutorial.
Golf carts are just around the corner. Currently, you can enter the golf cart as the driver. Next is to make it drivable but also make it so other players can enter on the shotgun side and mount the back cart. This will make for a really cool video on TikTok, so keep your eye out for that one.
Furthermore, Steam graphical assets are currently being worked on. Once finalised we will make this Steam store for this game publically available for wishlisting.
Out of Sight
In the last few days of February, we've added a new feature "Enemy Searching". Previously if a sound was heard or an alarm exposed the player's location the enemy would go to that location and then return. Now enemies will search around for a bit, some will even check lockers to see if the player is inside.
